TechHub Accelerate – what is it, and how can it help me and my business?

Applications are now open for TechHub’s TechHub Accelerate programme, which directly supports underrepresented founders in tech.

We wanted to use this blog as an opportunity to explain a bit more about us, why we’re doing TechHub Accelerate, what you can expect from the programme, and whether it’s right for you.

Who / what is TechHub? TechHub is an ecosystem enabler. We were the first initiative to support tech entrepreneurs in London 10 years ago, and we’ve been working alongside key players in tech for the past 10 years to build and support the ecosystem as you see it today. What we have become over that time is the home for tech startups. We want founders to feel at home at TechHub, to have a comfortable, reliable place to work from, a community of like minded individuals to knowledge-share and socialise with, and a network of support and guidance to help you grow. You can find out a bit more about us at techhub.com

Why are TechHub doing this? As a key contributor to the growth of London’s tech ecosystem, we’ve noticed there’s a lack of founders from diverse backgrounds and we want this to change. These founders act as role models for earlier stage companies and young people considering careers in tech, and they change perceptions of what it means to be a successful founder amongst the ecosystem. We want to amplify your voice as one of our chosen TechHub Accelerate entrepreneurs and share your stories, promote your company and products. We know that visibility matters (a recent study on black women role models in science, technology, engineering and maths demonstrates that yet again).

Do I qualify as an underrepresented founder? When we say underrepresented founder, what we mean is any founders that are currently not represented well within the tech industry. You may select only one or as many areas of marginalisation you are currently facing listed below – whatever feels most comfortable for you. None of this information will be shared outside of the TechHub Team without your permission.

  • People of colour
  • LGBTQIA+ people
  • All women, including cis women and trans women
  • Trans people, including genderfluid, non-binary, and those without gender
  • Disabled people, those with impairments, visually impaired and blind people, those with chronic illnesses and invisible disabilities
  • Refugees, people seeking asylum, and forced migrants
  • D/deaf people
  • Veterans

If you’d like to be considered for this programme for another reason, you can select “other” and give us some details about why. Feel free to email hello@techhub.com if you want to double check before you apply.

Is my business at the right stage to qualify for / benefit from the programme? TechHub’s mission for the past 10 years has been to support the growth of the ecosystem. We currently have 400 tech startups based out of our HQ in Shoreditch, and these range from sole founders building their, to startups with teams of 60 who are a few years into their business, have raised money and are scaling, and everything size in-between.

If you are pre-launch / pre-revenue that’s great, If you’ve launched and are looking for pre-seed / seed investment – perfect, or if you’re post seed investment, with a team and looking to raise your Series A – we’d love you to apply.

The only requirement is that you’re building a tech product. i.e. there is a strong tech element to your business. For example, you’re building a platform, you have an app, you’re building hardware or software, you’re using deep tech to solve problems etc. If you have any questions about whether your business will qualify, you can email our team at hello@techhub.com

What if I’m not working on my business full time? Or am going through another programme already? When we say ‘programme’ we don’t mean a full time programme taking place over a fixed term. We know from our community that access, content and flexibility is important for busy founders who are juggling multiple priorities. You’ll have access to TechHub’s workspace for 20 hours per week between 9am-8pm Monday to Friday, and you can use those hours when and how you wish – to have meetings, to hot desk amongst our community, to attend events etc. TechHub Accelerate gives you access and support for a year, and everything is opt in, so it is totally up to you how much you take advantage of the workspace, the community and the business growth support.

What do you mean by business growth support? As well as providing a physical space for our community of tech startups to work from, we also provide our 400 member companies with a growth support programme designed to help them operate and scale their businesses. We run over 180 events every year covering 5 different areas; investment, product development, hiring, customer, and operations. The events run every week, as workshops, roundtable discussions, or as 1:1 sessions, and they’re all hosted by experts from the ecosystem, at TechHub. You can get a feel for the types of events that we run here, and all these events will be available to you. If you are interested in an event, you sign up and join. If another event isn’t for you, you don’t attend – flexible and easy J

What do you mean by amplify my voice in the ecosystem? We are doing this because we feel there is a lack of diversity in the tech ecosystem, and rather than talk about it, we want to take action. With our credibility and connections within the industry, we can support you to be heard in the ecosystem. We’d love to give you space on our website and social media to talk about your experiences, invite you to write blog posts to be a role model to others and to help us create a public exchange. By being a part of TechHub Accelerate, we’ll also offer you a guaranteed spot to demo your product at one of our flagship event #TechHubTuesday Demo Night. All of this is available to you if you want to take advantage of it.
