TechHub Member Spotlight : Daniel Layne of Quotevine
What is your background and how did you end up doing a startup?
I have been programming since the days of the ZX Spectrum, when I made little games with a couple of geek friends...one of whom went on to be an accomplished games coder on the Acorn Archimedes...ah, the good ol' days. Once I was all grown-up I went to work as a pro coder in a bank, where I worked on ATMs and the trials of Chip and PIN, amongst many other things. Then I spent 12 years working in financial IT, where I got bored designing the same systems over and over again, hence the birth of my startup, Quotevine.
Tell me about Quotevine
It's a SaaS platform for the automotive industry. Like Salesforce.com for companies that make, sell or finance cars.
Why did you choose TechHub? Has the community been helpful?
I saw some of the early press and came along to the old building on City Road, as well as trying a few other shared spaces. TechHub was the best. It's been really helpful. Being reasonably experienced/old... It's not so much assistance with tech I need, but being able to ask opinions on other services like legal, or helper apps, and just knowing that you're around some really bright people so you better be playing your A game! :)
What's a piece of advice you would give to a budding entrepreneur?
Get a co-founder: it will make more of a difference than you could imagine. Get your product out the door and get some real world feedback as early as possible Try not to get too much of a caffeine habit.
One random or silly fact about yourself!
I was once in a band called International Sex Club. The name was, sadly, a blatant violation of the trade descriptions act on two of the 3 fronts.
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us, Daniel!
